I love using what grows in our garden, and this healthy fruit crumble is the easiest way to enjoy it all.
There’s something special about autumn mornings in our garden. It’s not big, but it’s full of life and full of fruit. When we bought the house, the garden was already blessed with beautiful fruit trees that had been planted by the previous owners, a couple who were real gardening enthusiasts.
Thanks to them, we now enjoy a mix of early and late apple varieties, two plum trees, and my favourite, a pear tree that grows three kinds of pears on one trunk. Summer, late summer, and autumn pears, all sharing space and sunlight. Every year, it feels like a little miracle watching them ripen one after another.
So when the fruit starts to pile up in baskets by the kitchen door, I know it’s crumble time.

From Garden To Freezer And To The Oven
It’s now October, and while the plum trees have finished for the year, our freezer still holds a few bags of those juicy September plums. The apple and pear trees, on the other hand, are still full — some fruits have already fallen, others are still ripening in the autumn sun.
This crumble brings them all together, using frozen plums for their rich, jammy flavour and freshly picked apples and pears for texture and sweetness. It’s the kind of mix that fills the kitchen with the scent of autumn and makes you grateful for every season’s harvest.
NOTE:
This crumble works just as well with home-bottled fruit. If you’ve bottled or stewed apples and pears for winter, they also make a lovely base. You can mix them with frozen plums or any other fruit you’ve saved. It’s an excellent way to enjoy your garden’s harvest throughout the year.
Healthier, Simple, And Full Of Flavour
My husband loves something sweet with his coffee, and I try to keep our treats on the healthier side. Instead of opting for store-bought cakes loaded with sugar and refined flour, I embrace simplicity and use what we grow, returning to the basics.
This healthy fruit crumble is made with no added sugar, relying instead on the natural sweetness of apples, pears, and plums, complemented by a hint of cinnamon. The fruit turns beautifully soft and juicy, and the oat nut crumble topping gives the dessert its lovely crunch and warm, nutty aroma.
What Do You Need For This No Added Sugar Crumble
INGREDIENTS
I prefer my crumble to be full of fruit and have only a little topping for crunch, so I use around 8 to 10 large apples.
I prefer to use a ceramic baking tray measuring 20 cm x 30 cm (8 inches x 12 inches).
For the mixed fruit layer:
- apples, peeled and grated (I prefer Brambley apples)
- pears, peeled and sliced
- frozen or fresh plums, halved and pitted
- ground cinnamon

For the oat nut crumble topping:
- rolled oats
- chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans)
- maple syrup
- coconut oil or butter (melted)
- cinnamon

Easy Step-by-Step Guide To Make Healthy Fruit Crumble
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Prepare the fruit: Peel, quarter, and core the apples and pears, and halve the plums if using fresh ones.
- Grate: Add grated apples, pears, and plums to a baking dish, and mix gently. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
- To make the crumble topping, combine oats, nuts, maple syrup, and coconut oil or butter in a bowl. Stir until all ingredients are lightly coated and sticky.
- Assemble: Spread the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit.
- Bake for about 40–45 minutes, until the topping turns golden and the fruit begins to bubble through the edges.
- Cool slightly before serving. It tastes best warm.

How We Enjoy This Fruit Mix With Oat Nut Crumble Topping
We’re two very different crumble eaters in this house. I like mine as it is, straight from the oven, still warm, maybe with a cup of coffee. It’s enough. The fruit gives all the sweetness I need.
My husband, on the other hand, wouldn’t skip his custard or ice cream for the world. That’s his version of happiness, and I’m OK with that. I’ll take my crumble clean, thank you, no unnecessary empty calories.

But coffee? Always yes.
Serving Tip
This mixed fruit crumble is best enjoyed warm, straight from the oven, when the fruit turns soft and juicy and the topping becomes golden and crisp. It pairs beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of warm custard, double cream or a spoonful of thick Greek yoghurt for a lighter twist.
If there’s any left (which rarely happens), let it cool completely and store it in the fridge, covered, for up to three days. It reheats perfectly in the oven or air fryer, keeping that lovely crunch on top.
Why I Love This Recipe
It’s easy. It’s wholesome. And it’s a reminder that healthy eating doesn’t mean giving up pleasure. When you bake with what you grow, even if it’s something you’ve tucked away in the freezer from a good harvest, food naturally tastes better.
This mixed fruit crumble is a little taste of the garden: apples for balance, pears for sweetness, and plums for colour and tang. It’s comforting, juicy, and full of natural flavour, proof that a no added sugar crumble is still a proper treat. I love how the oats and nuts bring just enough crunch to balance the soft, caramelised fruit underneath.
👉 Whether you’re trying to eat cleaner, healthier or want a quick, affordable dessert that feels comforting, this healthy fruit crumble recipe brings the best of both worlds.
