History
According to Wikipedia, Chocolate originated in Mesoamerica, where people consumed fermented chocolate beverages between 1900 BC and 1500 BC. The cacao seeds were so precious to the Mexican people that they were used as currency, as they believed that they were a gift from the god of wisdom, Quetzalcoatl. At first, chocolate was prepared as a bitter drink mixed with spices or corn puree, which is believed to have aphrodisiac properties and provide strength. Even today, locals in southern Mexico and Central America’s northern triangle still make this drink, known as “Chilate.”
After its introduction to Europe in the 16th century, sugar was added to chocolate, making it popular among all social classes. During the 20th-century wars, it was considered a vital component of US soldiers’ rations. The English word “chocolate” comes from the Classical Nahuatl word xocolātl, whose origin is uncertain but was introduced to English via Spanish.
Guilt-free chocolate
What about when I tell you that you can eat chocolate and not feel guilty or ashamed, and that a piece of chocolate is good for you? Research suggests that cocoa in chocolate may offer various health benefits, such as improving heart health, enhancing brain function, increasing energy levels, and more. These benefits may be particularly noticeable in older adults due to the specific nutrients found in cocoa.
You can enjoy this homemade sugar-free chocolate knowing it supports your health when eaten in moderation.

Variations of the easy sugar-free chocolate
Adding extra flavour or crunchiness can make your homemade sugar-free chocolate extraordinary.
- Adding peanut butter to chocolate is one of my favourite treats. The saltiness from the nuts complements the sweetness of the chocolate, creating a delicious and exciting flavour that I think you’ll love. Give it a try, and let me know what you think!
- Dry fruit, especially orange peel, raisins, cherries or chopped apricots, gives the chocolate a luxurious taste.
- Hazelnuts or Almonds. Whole hazelnut dark chocolate is my other all-time favourite. I love that extra crunchiness and flavour of hazelnuts.
- Change the flavour by adding orange, mint, raspberry, caramel, or your preferred flavour of sugar-free drops.

Homemade with Love – And Gone in Minutes
Last Valentine’s Day, I decided to skip the store-bought sweets and surprise my sweetheart with a batch of homemade chocolate. I poured the mixture into heart-shaped moulds and added a few organic hazelnuts for extra crunch and flavour.
I used Sukrin syrup and just a few drops of vanilla stevia for a subtle, natural sweetness to keep it sugar-free. They turned out rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious!
Needless to say, they didn’t last long; my husband polished off most of them by the next day and asked me to make more. That’s when I knew this recipe was a keeper.
