This irresistible and butter-free creamy frosting is a game-changer in the world of luxurious treats, and it’s my favourite cake filler.
You can savour the rich and velvety frosting without guilt or worry, knowing it’s much lighter than butter, as it uses mascarpone instead.

And the best thing is that in just under 10 minutes, you can whip up this delicious frosting from scratch.

Whether you’re frosting a cake or cupcakes or just looking for a sweet dip for your fruit, this heavenly and delectable creation will satisfy your cravings and leave you wanting more.

Butter is a beloved staple in many kitchens, but there are many reasons to skip it. Some people avoid butter because of dietary restrictions or health concerns, such as high cholesterol. Others may opt for different flavours and textures in their cooking or baking. Mascarpone is a popular alternative to butter. It is a creamy, versatile cheese that can be used in various recipes.

Below is a nutrition comparison of mascarpone and butter for your information. Mascarpone

What do you need to make this butter-free frosting

Ingredients:

  • Mascarpone
  • Cream cheese
  • Sour cream or Fromage frais
  • Double cream or whipping cream
  • Sugar or sugar substitute

Flavour Options for Your Frosting

Chocolate Frosting

  • Add cacao powder and grated chocolate if you like a little crunch.
  • Increase the sweetener (sugar or stevia) to balance out the bitterness of the cacao.
  • Optional flavour twist: try vanilla, coffee, or salted caramel drops.

Vanilla Frosting

  • Add vanilla stevia drops (for a sugar-free option)
  • Or use vanilla extract or vanilla sugar if you’re happy with some extra sweetness.

Coffee-Flavoured Frosting
You have three great options, depending on what you have at home:

  • Use instant coffee dissolved in just a bit of hot water.
  • Use strong brewed ground coffee, with or without the grinds, again with just a splash of hot water. (This version may need more sugar to balance it.)
  • Or go for Camp coffee. It’s already sweet, so reduce the sugar in your frosting accordingly.

Both regular and decaffeinated coffee are good if you’re using coffee for this creamy frosting.

NOTE:

You can mix and match the above ingredients depending on what you have. However, double cream (or whipping cream) is essential. Double cream usually has around 50% fat, while whipping cream has around 39% fat. It is an essential ingredient in your frosting to keep it creamy.

I know that in some countries, you can’t get such high-fat double or whipping cream. In that case, you can add a 1/4 tsp of cream of tartar to stabilise your frosting.

How do you make this delicious creamy frosting

The how-to has just two steps:

1/ Pour all ingredients into a large bowl to prevent splashing while whisking.

2/ Whisk on medium speed until everything is mixed and the frosting becomes creamy.

And Voila! Your frosting is ready.

NOTE:

If you have time, let the frosting cool in the fridge before you spread it on your cake, pancake or cupcake. But this step is not necessary.

Cream Frosting: More Than Just a Topping

Cream frosting is a dessert topping with superpowers. It’s soft, rich, and incredibly versatile. While it’s a classic go-to for cakes and cupcakes, its magic doesn’t stop there; this butter-free version can be used in all kinds of fun and unexpected ways.

Here are some delicious ideas to get creative with creamy frosting:

  • Spread it on brownies for an indulgent upgrade that turns a simple traybake into something special.
  • Dollop it onto freshly baked cookies, chocolate chip, oatmeal, or even gingerbread and enjoy that smooth, creamy contrast with a bit of crunch.
  • Fill doughnuts, pancakes, or crepes with it for a surprise centre that’s lighter than custard but just as satisfying.
  • Use it as a fruit dip; it’s perfect with strawberries, apple slices, or banana chunks for a quick, no-fuss dessert.
  • Layer it into a pancake or crepe cake (like the one in this post) for a dreamy, melt-in-your-mouth finish.

Once you try this creamy frosting, you’ll want to keep a bowl in the fridge for whenever a dessert emergency strikes — or when your pancakes deserve a little upgrade.

🎨Add a Splash of Colour & Creativity

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to have a little fun, experiment with natural or bold food colourings in your frosting to make your desserts truly pop. Whether you’re going for pastel tones or vibrant bursts of colour, just a few drops can transform a simple dessert into a showstopper.

Opt for natural colourings made from fruit and plant extracts if you can. They may be a bit more expensive than artificial ones, but they’re a healthier choice, especially if you’re mindful about what goes into your food, and they still deliver stunning results.

Adding colour to your creamy frosting isn’t just about looks, it’s about expression. Match the frosting to a theme, a celebration, or just your mood. From birthday bakes to weekend treats, coloured butter-free frosting can bring a whole new level of joy to your kitchen.

✨ The Possibilities? Endless.

There’s no right or wrong way to use this creamy frosting. Get creative. Try new flavours. Play with textures and toppings. Whether layering it into pancakes, spreading it on cookies, or piping it onto cakes, the options are as open as your imagination.
